A community that stays on top of the snow.
The Central Oregon Avalanche Center empowers the backcountry community to make informed decisions by providing avalanche forecasting, observations, and education.
Our story
COAC began in 2009 as the Central Oregon Avalanche Association, to provide accurate snow and avalanche information and grow avalanche awareness in Central Oregon. In the 2017/18 season it was recognized as a Type 2 avalanche center, and in 2018/19 it took the name Central Oregon Avalanche Center.
COAC is an Oregon 501(c)(3) non-profit (EIN 27-1929412). A volunteer Board of Directors provides financial and operational oversight to a lead avalanche forecaster, a team of forecasters and observers, and membership and marketing staff. COAC also maintains the Moon Mountain weather station and the Tyler Heilman station at Paulina Peak, so everyone can see mountain snow and weather data.
